Reading Implication: Moral Injury in Heinrich Böll’s <i>Billard um halb zehn</i> and Vasilii Grossman’s <i>Vse techet</i>

چکیده
Abstract This essay demonstrates the usefulness of ‘moral injury’ as a prism for comparative literary research, particularly between post-National Socialist German and post-Stalinist Russian contexts. I outline tendency in study post-atrocity fiction to focus on psychoanalytically defined notions trauma. Subsequently, explain how moral injury, which denotes damaging psychological ramifications transgressing one’s code, offers productive lens considering thematization morally ambiguous experiences that do not comfortably fit into categories victim perpetrator, position recently labelled ‘implicated subject’ by Michael Rothberg. Comparing West author Heinrich Böll’s novel Billard um halb zehn Soviet writer Vasilii Grossman’s Vse techet, show these texts emphasize importance individually reckoning with implication historical violence matter personal integrity. propose developing strategies ‘reading implication’ such injury can foster ethical forms transnational comparison.
